Madan Sabnavis: Why 'Post Bank of India' is not a workable idea

The idea of converting India Post into  Post Bank of India  is quite tempting when we look at the basic structure of the postal system in India. There are around 155,000 post offices against around 98,000 bank branches. There is one post office for every 21.21 square kilometres of area and 7,817 people. These offices have 287 million accounts (2012); in contrast, the entire banking system has 903 million (2013) accounts. They have 116 million depositors with deposits of Rs 3.96 lakh crore (the number for  banks  is not available). If certificates are added, the amount would be Rs 6 lakh crore. The postal department has 474,000 employees - or an average of three people for every branch. Banks, on the other hand, employ 1.096 million people, with an average of 11 for every branch.  Prima facie , we can think of the business correspondent model taking off. Add to this the fact that  postal services  are progressively becoming less relevant today as a result of the proliferation of mob

Lower package rates and inadmissible deductions etc. have also been reported to be the other reasons for withdrawal of agreed cashless /credit facilities. 24 out of 407 Private hospitals empanelled under CGHS decided unilaterally to discontinue credit facility to the eligible categories of CGHS beneficiaries. Show Cause Notices stand issued to these Hospitals and the empanelment of five Hospitals has been suspended for a period of six months or till further orders, whichever is earlier. In this regard, the CGHS beneficiaries are advised not to be guided by misleading information as most of the private hospitals are continuing to extend the cashless fa
COUNTING OF TRAINING PERIOD FOR INCREMENT
Despite govt. assurance, private hospitals to stop cashless CGHS facility Private hospitals have told that will no longer offer cashless treatment to government employees, even if they are covered under the central government's health service scheme. The move comes just two days after the government issued a press statement against the media reports that private hospitals on the panel of CGHS are denying credit facilities to the eligible CGHS beneficiaries for delay in settlement of hospitals bills. ( Read : Government clarifies : Cashless CGHS to continue ) The association representing private hospitals says it has no option but to take this harsh step. The reason: the Central government as of today, owes Rs 200 crore to private hospitals.  "This 200 crore is their data only. Actual amount will be more and pending for so much time, that is our only worry", says Dr Giridhar Gyani, Director General of the Association of Healthcare Providers (India). G
