GUNMEN TRYING TO ROB POST OFFICE, OPEN FIRE, INJURED GUARD

An employee of Gauripur post office was injured inside his office in lower Assam's Dhubri district this evening when gunmen opened fire in a bid to rob the post office, the police said. The two assailants went to the post office around 6.30 PM when its Post Master Rabindra Kumar Biswas was counting the day's collection of small savings before depositing the amount in the nearby sadar police station, they said. Stating that the gunmen came in the pretext of depositing money, the police said when the Post Master refused to accept their money as the post office had closed for the day at 4 PM, the assailants opened fire seriously injuring the PO's guard.

DOP DEBIT CARDS WILL WORKS AT BANK ATMs WITHIN SIX MONTHS

In six months, those having accounts with post offices can use their postal debit cards to withdraw cash from Automated Teller Machines (ATM) operated by banks too. With the inauguration of an ATM facility at the Park Town head post office on Monday, all the city’s nine head post offices, including the ones at Mylapore, Avadi and St.Thomas Mount, have ATMs now. In the Park Town head post office, to start with, 250 customers will be provided with debit cards and more customers will get theirs soon. Charles Lobo, chief postmaster general, Tamil Nadu circle, inaugurated the ATM and distributed debit cards. Once the facility of interoperable ATMs are in place, bank customers can withdraw cash from ATMs at post offices too, said Mervin Alexander, postmaster general (Chennai City Region) at the function. The government is set to reduce interest rates on small savings products such as public provident fund and National Savings Certificate over the next few days - a move that will impact returns on your bank fixed deposits but also pave the way for banks to pare lending rates in the coming months and reduce the EMI burden.  The new formula will see small savings rates linked to returns on government securities of comparable maturity, with the reduction expected to be up to 50 basis points (100 basis points equal a percentage point). The finance ministry is finalizing product-specific rates and sources said the impact would be higher in case of maturity period of less than five years. There are indications that senior citizens and women will be protected with products such as the Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana spared the the axe, at least for the moment.  The new rates are expected to be notified over the next few days with the government set to announce quarterly revision...
